The Ribiška družina Vrhnika was founded in 1955 and has been working since, without any interruptions. We are managing the Ljubljanica from its springs in Močilnik and Retovje to the bridge in Podpeča with all the tributaries, a little pond at Ribiški dom Sulec in Sinja Gorica, the ponds Opekarna in Verd, the pond Ribčev ribnik in Bistra and the pond Lokev in Logatec.
The Ljubljanica is divided into districts 30 and 31. The district 30 then divides to salmonid and cyprinid part. The district 31 is a mixed type. The salmonid part of the district 30 extends from the Ljubljanica to the bridge on the highway. The fly fishing is allowed here. Mostly graylings and brown trouts live in this district, but you can also see rainbow trouts, chubs, common nases and -the king of all the waters huchen- swim here. It is possible to fish from shore and somewhere even to walk through water. The only problem is thick river vegetation on the banks and , in the summertime, even the channel is overgrown with it ,in the whole basin of this bog beauty. That's why the omni present question of all the fishermen is what could be hiding in its green chest.
The cyprinid part begins at the bridge across the highway and ends at the border with the district 31 ( Kamini ). This district is of mixed character, which means that we can fish either for whitefish or predatory fish here. The fishing is allowed only from the shore. This place is very popular for fishing of huchen in the wintertime, which is usually done by boat angling.
The district 31 begins at the place where the Pekov graben flows into the Ljubljanica from the left side ( at Kamin) and extends to the road bridge in Podpeča. It is also the district of mixed type, because here live all species of the fish that can be found in the Ljubljanica. It used to be well known for big Danube roaches, graylings, pikes and huchens, but it hasn't recovered yet from the great death from Borovniščica downstream. Lately, they have been having even the great problems with cormorants, who prey in flocks of 50 to 200 birds, all around our managing fishing area.
The bigger part of our still waters are represented by the ponds Opekarna, the home for carps, catfish and small fish, but you can find some pikes or zanders. It is allowed to fish for all the named fish, from the shore. The pond at Ribiški dom, the pond Lokev and the pond Ribičev ribnik are meant for fishing of carps and small fish using the float fishing equipment.
Besides the fishing waters the Ribiška družina Vrhnika has a number of breeding streams and conservation waters, where it is forbidden to fish.
At the end, let us mention the fact that the Ribiška družina Vrhnika cooperates with the civil and public institutions and with locals very well. The proof for it is our annual fishing festivity and joint ventures with the police and fire departments.
