The Tolmin Fishing Club (RDT) is an association established with the purpose of protecting and cultivating native and other fish species, managing sport fishing, and preserving water bodies as well as aquatic and riparian ecosystems that are part of the human environment and recreational activities. The club is one of the largest fishing associations in Slovenia, with approximately 400 permanent members and 40 junior members.
Anglers have access to around 140 kilometers of fishing waters across ten rivers. The club manages a section of the Tolmin fishing district, covering the municipalities of Bovec, Kobarid, and Tolmin. This includes the Soča River from the Čezsoča bridge in the Bovec area to Podsel, along with all its tributaries, the Nadiža River within Slovenia and its tributaries, as well as the Idrijca River with its tributaries from Stopnik to its confluence with the Soča. The only permitted fishing method in the Tolmin Fishing Club's waters is fly fishing.
A distinctive feature of this fishing district is the Marble Trout (Salmo marmoratus), the largest trout species in Europe. Due to hybridization with the non-native brown trout, the marble trout was on the brink of extinction. The RDT played a crucial role in its conservation. The largest recorded marble trout ever caught measured 121 cm and weighed 25 kg.
For sustainable management, the Tolmin Fishing Club operates three fish farming facilities dedicated to breeding marble trout: the Modrej hatchery, built in 1989, and two fish farms on the Tolminka River in Tolmin, constructed in 1995 and 2015, respectively.
